Renovations Week: Day 3 - Built-in Shelves

We have a fireplace and, because of its chimney, we have a huge weird nook in our bedroom. Originally we had a bookshelf which fit in it perfectly, but when the bookshelf collapsed under the weight of our absurd amount of books (this is the second bookshelf to collapse, btw), we decided to purchase a much larger bookshelf and make some built-in shelves out of the nook. It's now an annex for our tiny closet.

I think I may need 1-2 more shelves and if I could do it again, I think I would buy wood to size so it fit the entire hole. Instead I went the cheap and easy way and purchased pre-cut/pre-painted shelves.

Items Required: 

2 - 12"x 24" white shelves (yes you CAN buy wood and make it even more DIY, but meh) - $5.48 ea
4 - 8" white shelf brackets - $2.49 ea
1 - Giant, weird nook

PROJECT TOTAL: ~$21

I'm still trying to organize it so that it adds to the look of the room, while giving me some additional storage space. Suggestions?
