Beat the Winter Blues!

Beat the Winter Blues!

Beat the Winter Blues! by limbojewelry

We are all guilty of a little winter wallowing when the weather gets harsh and the bright sun seems like a distant memory.
Here are our tips on how to boost your mood and avoid "S.A.D.-ness"

#1  Stay Active
 - Exercise is a great way to keep your mood in check. Make it a social engagement with a friend, like a yoga class together, so you have someone to hold you accountable and keep you socially adept!

- Set goals and start tackling them today! Have a closet full of clothes you don't wear anymore? Have a hobby you enjoy but have been neglecting? Have an idea for an amazing trip you want to take when the weather is nice again? Give your self the time you need to plan and focus your energy on creating what you want from life.

- Start planning your dream garden. Place your seed order and start sprouts in your window or under a grow lamp. Once the weather permits you will be able to transplant those babies outside.

#2 Get Cozy
- Invest in a nice robe and slippers, these can make all the difference in your experience with a cold winter bathroom!

- Open your window before going to bed or set a lamp on a timer to turn on an hour before you have to wake up. The light will help make it easier to get out of your warm cozy bed in the mornings, it can also be helpful to turn a space heater on beside the bed before hopping out.

- Having trouble sleeping? Light some candles and take a hot lavender Epsom salt bath 30 minutes before bed to help you sleep.

#3 Stay Hydrated
- Not to sound like a mom, but drink extra water, it keeps your skin looking nice! Add some fresh lemon in the morning to warm water to boost your immune system, aid your digestion, help clear your skin/reduce inflammation, freshen your breath and to give you an energy boost before reaching for that morning coffee.

- Wash your face before bed and apply a moisture mask and good lip balm before going to sleep. This will help keep your face and lips looking fresh and hydrated when you wake. If  running the heater is still making you wake up dried out and flaky, invest in a humidifier for beside your bed to keep you feeling refreshed in the morning.

#4 Supplement
- We all get less sunlight time in the winter, so it's a good idea to supplement with vitamins, particularly vitamin D. If you are feeling groggy and slow it is also good to take B-vitamins to give you an energy boost and aid your metabolism. If you work indoors try to taking a 15 minute walk during your lunch break to give you more time to enjoy the sun while it's out and to boost your mood before going back to the grind.

- Drink more hot coffee or tea! There are studies that show that drinking them boosts energy levels, increases brain activity, helps fight depression, aids metabolism, provides essential nutrients, and can help prevent certain diseases. This may be due to coffee and tea being the largest source of antioxidants in the Western diet.

-Buy yourself some fresh flowers or a potted plant to put on your desk. The presence of plants in your work environment has been shown to reduce stress, increase productivity, reduce sickness, increase your creativity, give you cleaner air to breathe, and simply creates a more inviting environment!

How to Plan a Beauty Swap

I decided to clean out the dreaded cosmetic cabinet. As I attempted to toss out the items I hadn't used in over six months, I realized that the reason for my beauty product hoarding was because I knew the value of each item. As a frugalista, it hurt my heart to throw out products just because I didn't use them. If you find yourself in a place of cabinet space vs. wastefulness, don't just toss out your items, Keep Calm and Swap On!

Planning a Beauty Swap
  1. Pull out items that you haven't used in six months to a year.
  2. Separate the items by category: Hair, Jewelry, Make-Up, Body, Face, Hands & Feet
  3. Invite your friends and ask them to also bring unwanted products, jewelry and clothes.
  4. Create signs (I used picture frames) to let your guests know where to put their items.
  5. Serve some bellinis or another flirty drink and encourage your friends to bring their favorite side dishes.
NOTE: A portable garment rack showcases the available goods, while keeping the floor clear.

Not only will you unload some of your unused products in a less wasteful manner, but you may also come out with some new goodies!
