Beat the Winter Blues!

Beat the Winter Blues!

Beat the Winter Blues! by limbojewelry

We are all guilty of a little winter wallowing when the weather gets harsh and the bright sun seems like a distant memory.
Here are our tips on how to boost your mood and avoid "S.A.D.-ness"

#1  Stay Active
 - Exercise is a great way to keep your mood in check. Make it a social engagement with a friend, like a yoga class together, so you have someone to hold you accountable and keep you socially adept!

- Set goals and start tackling them today! Have a closet full of clothes you don't wear anymore? Have a hobby you enjoy but have been neglecting? Have an idea for an amazing trip you want to take when the weather is nice again? Give your self the time you need to plan and focus your energy on creating what you want from life.

- Start planning your dream garden. Place your seed order and start sprouts in your window or under a grow lamp. Once the weather permits you will be able to transplant those babies outside.

#2 Get Cozy
- Invest in a nice robe and slippers, these can make all the difference in your experience with a cold winter bathroom!

- Open your window before going to bed or set a lamp on a timer to turn on an hour before you have to wake up. The light will help make it easier to get out of your warm cozy bed in the mornings, it can also be helpful to turn a space heater on beside the bed before hopping out.

- Having trouble sleeping? Light some candles and take a hot lavender Epsom salt bath 30 minutes before bed to help you sleep.

#3 Stay Hydrated
- Not to sound like a mom, but drink extra water, it keeps your skin looking nice! Add some fresh lemon in the morning to warm water to boost your immune system, aid your digestion, help clear your skin/reduce inflammation, freshen your breath and to give you an energy boost before reaching for that morning coffee.

- Wash your face before bed and apply a moisture mask and good lip balm before going to sleep. This will help keep your face and lips looking fresh and hydrated when you wake. If  running the heater is still making you wake up dried out and flaky, invest in a humidifier for beside your bed to keep you feeling refreshed in the morning.

#4 Supplement
- We all get less sunlight time in the winter, so it's a good idea to supplement with vitamins, particularly vitamin D. If you are feeling groggy and slow it is also good to take B-vitamins to give you an energy boost and aid your metabolism. If you work indoors try to taking a 15 minute walk during your lunch break to give you more time to enjoy the sun while it's out and to boost your mood before going back to the grind.

- Drink more hot coffee or tea! There are studies that show that drinking them boosts energy levels, increases brain activity, helps fight depression, aids metabolism, provides essential nutrients, and can help prevent certain diseases. This may be due to coffee and tea being the largest source of antioxidants in the Western diet.

-Buy yourself some fresh flowers or a potted plant to put on your desk. The presence of plants in your work environment has been shown to reduce stress, increase productivity, reduce sickness, increase your creativity, give you cleaner air to breathe, and simply creates a more inviting environment!

Homemade Fire & Ice | Red Carpet Facial

Save for nights when your better half is not home...

At Home Facial for Glowing Skin

It's been called the Red Carpet Facial because the Fire & Ice is a great facial for the day-of any major event. There's no down time, unlike chemical peels or invasive facials with extractions. I like to do a homemade version of this facial a few times each month to keep my skin glowing, soft and clear, while saving some money! Most importantly, it rids the face of acne scars and sun spots. LOVE THIS!

Disclaimer: Do a test area before applying to your face. (CLEARLY) If you're allergic to any of the ingredients, do not include them.

Ingredients:
(I just do these by sight. About a tsp each, but I add a bit more lemon juice)
  • Honey
  • Fresh Squeezed Lemon (real lemon, not bottled lemon juice)
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
Directions
  • Mix all ingredients together, I like to have a higher lemon to honey ratio. It may be a bit runny, if it's too runny to pick up in your hand, add more honey.
  • Apply in a circular motion to clean face - It should sting a little bit, but nothing too painful.
  • Leave on your face for 25-30 minutes
  • Clean face and wipe off any residue
  • Swipe an ice cube over your face to close the pores
  • Finish with a serum or moisturizer. I suggest Is Clinical Hydra Cool Serum, which is often used in Spa Fire & Ice facials.
*NOTE: Your face may be a little flushed for about 15 minutes after, this is normal!*
After: Barefaced Close-up

Why This Works

Nutmeg: Anti-inflammatory, with magical powers to erase acne scars
Cinnamon: Exfoliant, in addition to a lot of other nutritional benefits
Honey: Antiseptic with healing properties
Lemon: Tightens skin, minimizes pores and is used as a natural astringent

Cheers to happy skin in 2013!

Put Your Best Face Forward

Hi Sisters,

A couple girls have asked me for my beauty regimen, so here's Part I of a two part breakdown! In this post, I'm focusing on skin care. Here's my platoon -- all present and accounted for:

1. Sephora Instant Eye Makeup Remover
There's a simple reason this stuff works -- because it needs to. It would be wrong to assume all girls are hitting the mall with a fresh face, so Sephora needs to have a quick and easy remover to create a clean workspace. If you've ever had your make-up touched up at Sephora, you know the wonder of this little miracle worker -- enough said! Use nightly! (Sephora - $8)

2. Kate Sommerville Exfolikate
Created by the owner of the renowned Los Angeles skin care clinic,  this cruelty-free brand is all about one thing -- beautiful, clear skin. Exfolikate not only scuffs away dead cells to leave skin glowing, but the Acne version of the scrub contains Salicylic Acid which also rids the skin of pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. Don't worry if you're face is like mine and dries up at the thought of Salicylic Acid, this wonder scrub is packed with awesome ingrediants like Green French Clay and Jojoba Beads which will rejuvinate and moisturize your skin. Use 1-2 times per week. (Kate Sommerville - $65)

3. Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel
Cruelty-free, sulfate-free and preservative-free, this creamy dream of a product has nothing but yummy nutrients for your face. I promise that Boscia doesn't underwrite this blog, but I may as well be the spokeswoman for the brand! Use morning and night. (Boscia - $26)

4. Boscia Oil-free Daily & Nightly Hydration
I finally found the most weightless moisturizer and it improves skin after the first application!? In addition to it's obvious purpose, this stuff minimizes pores, controls oily skin and the day lotion includes SPF 15. Use day & night. (Boscia - $36 each)

5. Boscia Luminizing Black Mask
My love-affair continues... got blackheads? Not anymore. Use once per week. (Boscia - $34)

6. Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Pads
"Visibly reduces pimples and redness in 4 hours." No joke. These little miracle pads contain 2% Salicylic Acid and that combined with their exfoliating magic will leave you saying "what zit?" This is the best quick fix when you have a date or special event. Use only when needed, as it can be drying. (CVS - $9)

Stay tuned for Part II, as I open my makeup bag of secrets...
